A Fantastical Collection of Poland’s Great Historic Defenders
Polska Stara, or “Old Poland,” is an illustrative series celebrating the warrior legends of Poland’s rich and often turbulent history. Among them is King Krakus, the founder of Kraków, who built and defended Wawel Castle against the fearsome Wawel Dragon. Joanna Żubr, a soldier of the Napoleonic Wars, was one of the first women in the world to receive a military award for bravery in battle. Corporal Wojtek, the famed brown bear, served with the 2nd Polish Corps’ 22nd Artillery Supply Company; during the Battle of Monte Cassino in 1944, he famously carried ammunition crates alongside his fellow soldiers. And the legendary mermaid Syrenka, said to dwell along the riverbanks of Old Town Warsaw, has long been regarded as the guardian of the city, protecting its residents and merchants alike.
